INDOLE
Animalic Note
Indole is a chemical substance which comes in the form of white crystals, heavily smelling like naphthalene, the material found in moth-balls, therefore “naphthalenic” is one of its tones. Naturally occurring in flower oils like Jasmine, Gardenia and Orange flower, Indole is a rich perfume note, usually used as a fragrance’s heart element. The note’s symbolic strength is what makes it such a notable ingredient, and let us not forget the eternal debate on its “faecal” scent, which can be distasteful, but actually, this is not the first thing to be noticed. Indole is admittedly a pungent and heavy animalic note, with Jasmin nuances and an intense temper, but when diluted, it is an exceptional flower seducer, lending its depth to all surrounding floral notes.
